Text size

It's with sadness the family acknowledges the passing of Claudia (Sarah) Payton. She took her last breath surrounded by family at South Georgia Medical Center Tuesday February 20, 2018.
The daughter of J.T. and Eula Fountain was born in Troy Alabama February 12, 1936. She married the late Alvin Payton Sr., son of Badger James and Rebecca Payton, June 6, 1954. She matriculated in the Lowndes County School System and graduated from Dasher High School in 1954 where she was 7th in her class.
She joined Payton African Methodist Episcopal Church upon marriage and was very active in the Women's Missionary Society auxiliary. She also "encouraged" all 7 offspring to participate in church programs.
She operated a Home Daycare in which she helped guide and develop children for nearly 40 years. She developed kids and later the kid's kids. She was known as; Ma, Mama, Ma Payton, Ms. Payton... by the community and the multitude of kids that went through her daycare.
She also worked as "Office Manager" for Payton Floor Covering/Valdosta Floor Covering. For many years she served as manager from home while operating her daycare. She juggled the books for both operations without formal accounting training.
While performing the duties of 2 full time jobs, she made time to raise 7 kids of her own. As a mother; she was a counselor, always there to give her opinion and advice. She would often say "You're just as normal as everybody else-you can do whatever you want if you put your mind to it. She was a financial advisor who insisted her kids gave God his portion and save a percentage of the money made. She also taught the 7 how to consider buying rental property for residual income. She was a home economics teacher who insisted her kids knew how to cook, clean and take care of themselves. This included trips to Harvey's to learn how to choose the best deals. She was a visionary who encouraged and provided ways for her children to take piano lessons, dance lessons, participate in plays/programs and take part in school bands thus exposing her kids to ideas outside of the box. She was an inspiration to all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her parents J.T. and Eula Fountain and Husband Alvin Payton Sr., She is survived by her loving children, sons: Alvin Jr. (Lynda), Claude Anthony (Linda), Emanuel (Pamela), Gerald Carl (Fay), Issac Darryl (Anne). Daughters: Sandra TeSarah and Altricia Lynette (Randall), Sister Glen Lewis, 16 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren, brother/sister in-laws and a host of nieces' nephews, and friends.
