Mrs. Dorothy "Dot" Bell (Smith) died peacefully in her home on February 7, 2018 in Valdosta, Georgia at the age of 91.
She was born on May 11, 1926 in Valdosta, Georgia. She grew up in Orlando, Florida and graduated from Jones High School. She later returned to Valdosta, Georgia with her mother, Susie Watson (Fonza). She married Eugene Bell. After moving to Valdosta, she worked for South Georgia Pecan Factory, Tunnison Cleaning, and Bell South. Dorothy and Eugene welcomed 7 children. Her children remember her as a kind, gentle, loving, and strong-minded mother who encouraged them to pursue their goals.
She is preceded in death by her mother; Susie Watson, father: Robert Hill; husband: Eugene Bell Sr.; brother: John W. Bell; and sister: Robbie R. Howell.
Dorothy is survived by her seven children: Robert "Buddy" Smith Sr. of Detroit, MI., Dorothy J. Bell, Frederick Bell Sr., Lillie Calhoun, John Bell Sr. (Rhonda), Susie B. Davis (Fred), and Eugene Bell Jr. (Debra) all of whom reside in Valdosta, GA., one sister: Hattie Ruth Mayes of Valdosta, GA.; grandchildren: Belinda Griffin (DeWayne), Robert Smith Jr. (Laverne), Brian Smith (Sarah), Marcus Smith (Rachel) Shawn Cooper, Aurelio Pearson (Sandra), Holly Smith, Dawn Smith, Col. Gregory R. Bell (Nina), Ronald D. Bell (Shonda), Trailda Boyd, Frederick Bell Jr., Bryan Bell, Tammie Daniel, Frederick (Gerard)Bell, Frederica Green (Elijah), Tamara R. Calhoun (Mark), John Bell Jr. (Candra), Bianca Booker (Brad), Yolanda Emanuel, Aprille S. Washington (Marcus) Shayla R. Davis, Mikisha Collins (DeWayne), Brandi Bell, Eugenia Roach (Fred) Sharonda Statum, and Shakira Statum; and a host of great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
Dorothy was a generous and dedicated individual who loved children and who was passionate about helping in her community. She was an active and dedicated member of the American Legion Auxillary and Evergreen Missionary Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 3:00 P.M. at the House of God Church. Elder Willie McCoy is Pastor; however, Pastor Aden Fluker will officiate. Interment will follow at the Sunset Hill Cemetery. Repast will be held immediately after at the Westside Elementary School. Final rites were entrusted to Harrington Funeral Home Inc.
