Dr. Fred's Story
Dr. Fred Leon Nelson, Jr., 94, died Wednesday June 21, 2017 in Berrien Nursing Center.
He was born July 2, 1922 in Sweden, MO to the late Fred Lincoln Nelson and the late Susan Elizabeth Flynn Nelson. He completed 2 years of medical school at the University of Missouri and completed medical school at the University of Vermont. After graduating, he moved to Kansas City where he completed his internship and residence. He then moved his family to Tifton working for Tift General Hospital where he was instrumental in establishing the new hospital. He moved to Berrien County in 1974 becoming the first radiologist for Berrien County Hospital where he practiced until his retirement in 1987. He served in the United States Army and during WWII he received a Purple Heart at the Battle of the Bulge and 3 Bronze Stars. He was a member of Nashville United Methodist Church and was preceded in death by 2 brothers and a sister.
He is survived by his wife: Lorraine Shepard Nelson of Nashville; daughter: Mary Lou (Steven) Goehring of Atlanta; 2 sons: Allan Nelson of Nashville and Gregory (Leslie) Nelson of Arlington, TX; 5 grandchildren: Lisa (Jamie) Luke, Chris (Sarah Gray) Swindell, Stephanie (James) Harms, Lee B. (Deborah) Nelson and Kelly (Kevin) Jacobson; 6 great grandchildren: Conner Luke, John Patrick Luke, Lydia Katherine Luke, Rainn Jacobson, Elianna Nelson and Brandon Luke.
Funeral services will be held Saturday June 24, 2017 at 10 AM in Nashville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mark Addington officiating. Interment will follow in Westview Cemetery. Visitation is Friday 6 to 8 PM.
