Elven's Story

Elven Howling unexpectedly passed away on Wednesday, June 28, 2017 during a cross country trip with his wife Shirley. He would have celebrated his 85th birthday on September 24th. This was the last on his bucket list and he was so excited to get on the road. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jimmy & Mary Lou Crecy Howling, son, Wayne Howling, sisters Mary Lou Howling, Zelphia Beckham, Sara Jane Beverley, Nettie Lou Carter & Lou Crecy Kinchen, brother Timothy Howling and his 1st wife, Nezzie Chauncey Howling.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley Brogdon Howling, daughter Glenda (Bobby) Bryant of Valdosta, GA., sons Randy Howling, Adel, GA & Tony (Karen) Howling, Lee County, GA., sister Annie Ruth Roberts, Valdosta, GA. & brother, Jimmy Lee Howling, Okeechobee, FL; Grandchildren, Danny (Nina) Chauncey, Christopher (Samantha) Chauncey, Deshai (Will) Richardson, Valdosta, GA. & Justin Howling of Leesburg, GA; Great grandchildren: Lucas, Trent & Wes Richardson, Stephanie, Mathew, Ari & Christopher Chauncey. He had a number of nieces & nephews along with other family members & special friends, Pastor Raymond Cason, Lauren & Pat Riggins, Les Kolb & Ned Kirkland. He loved all of his in-laws and he had a close bond with his brother-in-law, Harry Brogdon.
Elven retired from the US Army after 20 years. He was stationed in FT Jackson, SC., Ft Lee, VA., Ft Bragg, NC., FT Benning, GA., FT Carson, CO., Alexandria, VA., Alaska, Eniwetock in the Pacific Islands, Japan, Iran & 2 tours in Vietnam. He received several commendations and had MANY interesting stories to tell from his time in the military. He was a pipefitter with Brown & Root in GA, MS & TX for several years after retiring from the military.
Elven loved spending time with family & friends, shooting pool and playing cards at the Senior Center in Valdosta. He was Volunteer of the year during time spent in Waverly. TN. He especially enjoyed his trips to Colorado for 25+ years to hunt elk & deer with his brother Tim, special nephews & friends. In 2013, He took his grandson Justin, who was 16 at the time, to Mt Rushmore & Yellowstone National Park. Lucas, Trent, and their Dad Will went with him on a longer trip to those places, the Grand Canyon and many other stops in 2016. He loved those trips with his family.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, July 8, 2017 in the Valdosta Chapel of Music Funeral Services with Pastor Raymond Cason officiating. Graveside services will follow at 1:00 PM in Shiloh Cemetery, Clinch County, GA where full military honors will be rendered. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM at the funeral home. Messages of Sympathy may be expressed online at www.musicfuneralservices.com.
