Ida's Story

Ida Gurtis Monroe, 93, of Quitman, Georgia was born on October 11, 1923 to the late Luther Ford and the late Eva Hillsman. Due to the loss of her mother at an early age, she was raised by her grandparents James and Ida Bell Ford. She received her education and also graduated from the Gillespie-Selden High School in Cordele, Georgia. Upon graduation, Ida attended Fort Valley University for her under graduate studies. She then earned her Masters Degree in early childhood education from the Florida AM University. As a child, she attended and actively served at the Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in Cordele. After graduating college, she began her first teaching job in Quitman, Georgia where she met and married her husband, Lester Monroe. She joined Bethel AME Church and served faithfully as the church organist for 60 years, Class Leader for 25 years, Sunday School Teacher for 25 years, Official Board Secretary for 41 years, and Chairman of the Memorial Committee. Mrs. Monroe was also a member of the Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow. She was an educator for the Brooks County School System as First and Second Grade teacher for 45 years. On April 14, 2017, Ida G. Monroe was called home to take her rest and be with the Lord.
She is preceded in death by her parents: Luther Ford and Eva Hillsman Ford; husband: Lester Monroe; son: Anthony Monroe; daughter-in-law: Sandra Watson Monroe.
She leaves to lament her passing her children: Torrence Monroe of Marietta, GA., Dennis Monroe Quitman, GA., and Denise Monroe of Quitman, GA.; sister: Katie Nell Clark of Wilbraham, MA.; nephew: Ronald Clark of Springfield, MA.; great-niece: Lynette Sommerville, Wilbraham, MA.; and a host of other relatives and sorrowing friends.
Home Going Celebration Service will be held on Saturday at 12:00 Noon at the Bethel AME Church in Quitman. Interment, North End Cemetery. Harrington Funeral Home Inc.
