Ira Lavinsky, 73, of Adel, Georgia, died Sunday, August 20, 2017, at his residence.
Funeral services will be held at 11AM, Thursday, August 24, 2017, at the Fitzgerald Hebrew Congregation Synagogue located at 302 South Lee Street in Fitzgerald, Georgia with Rabbi Arthur Lavinsky officiating. Interment will follow in the Fitzgerald Hebrew Congregation Cemetery.
Mr. Lavinsky was born April 22, 1944, in Brooklyn, New York, to the late Harry and Ida Tucker Lavinsky. He graduated high school from Wingate High School in New York. He was also a graduate from the University of South Florida, Valdosta State and took special courses at Emory University in Atlanta. Mr. Lavinsky was a retired teacher with 36 years of teaching in Brandon, Florida, Statenville, Alma and the Lowndes County Board of Education. He served as the Cantor for Fitzgerald Hebrew Congregation and Sunday School Teacher. Also, he was active in Temple Israel Synagogue, Valdosta, Georgia whenever needed. He was awarded The Abe Kruger Award in recognition for outstanding service to the Fitzgerald Hebrew Congregation. He was honored with a stained-glass window in the social hall of the Fitzgerald Hebrew Congregation Synagogue. He and his wife traveled to most of the Caribbean Islands. They mostly enjoyed the River Boat Cruises in Europe, Israel, Russia, and Turkey. He really enjoyed the beautiful flowers Glynda would plant in their garden. He also enjoyed visiting with friends and family in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Florida, and his extended family in South Georgia.
He is survived by his wife of almost 47 years, Glynda Henderson Lavinsky of Adel: sister, Muriel Ginnis Feinstein, niece Karen Ginnis of New York, nephew Tod Ginnis and family of New Jersey, brother-in-law Albert Chambers, niece Rebecca (William) Parramore Jr. of Statenville.
The family appreciates all the services from Dr. Steve Rigdon, the Oncology Department and the Hospice Department, all services of Tift Medical Center.
