Laverne Miller Smallwood

Stewardess Laverne Miller Smallwood was called by God October 24, 2017 at South Georgia Medical Center; as she answered the call.  She was born on May 25, 1950 to the late Catherine Elizabeth Simmons Miller and the late Hoyt Miller Sr. of Morven, Georgia.
As a youth she joined the Dillinoy C.M.E. Church and served there faithfully.  She became a woman of God professing Godliness with good works: 2 Timothy 2:10. She was a member of Lovejoy Chapter #246 Order of the Eastern Star. She has worn several hats as a faithful servant being the president of the Stewardess, church treasurer and vice president of the Missionary.
She graduated from Washington Street High School, Valdosta Technical Institute, and became a Certified Dietitian at SGMC. She worked in Lowndes County Schools and Valdosta School Systems in nutrition.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Mamie Louise Wright, her brother, Hoyt Miller, Jr., her great granddaughter, Khamiyah Newsome and several in-laws.
She leaves to cherish her memories her husband, Jonathan Smallwood of 24 years; her son, George Winston Ponder; her daughters,  Lee Houston  and Trina Ponder; grandchildren, Khadija Ponder, Roxanna Ponder, Kianna Ponder, Nyasia Ponder, Jhalicia Ponder, and Tiarra; 4 great grandchildren; 4 sisters Lula Clemons (Samuel), Carolyn Nelson (Allen), Brenda Miller, and Katryna Grisson (Henry); 2 brothers, Rev. James B. Miller (Thelma) and Ernest Miller (Beverly); adopted sister Ruth Butler;  devoted God-daughters, Lois Daniels (Julius) and Brenda Pendleton (John); In-laws: Carrie Jenkins, Alfred (Ira Lee) Smallwood, Floyd Smallwood, Frank (Barbara) Smallwood and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be Saturday, October 28, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. at Dillinoy C.M.E. Church in Morven, Georgia with Pastor J. B. Miller officiating. Burial will follow in the Pineview Cemetery in Morven. Friends and relatives are invited to share in the public visitation hours on Friday from 2:00 P.M. until 8:30 P.M. at Stevens-McGhee Funeral Home in Quitman.
