Mitchell's Story

Mitchell R. Montgomery, 71 of Jacksonville, Florida passed away on June 26, 2017. He was born on July 26, 1945, in Lowndes County, GA. He graduated from Lowndes County High and Valdosta State College. He was employed by Roger Budd Chevolet while still in college and moved to Florida upon his graduation. He became a successful home builder and land developer. He was founder and President of Montgomery Homes, Inc. which later became Montgomery Land Company and Real Estate Broker of Montgomery Realty Group, Inc. He received many awards for his work with the NE Florida Builders Association and was builder of the year in 1997 and 2000. He received the National Hope Award in 2000 for his contributions to minority housing.
Mr. Montgomery was President of Safari Club International/North Florida Chapter in 1992 where he played an integral part in developing the first Sensory Safari in elementary schools providing both visually impaired and sighted children the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of wildlife through the sensation of touch.
He is preceded in death by his parents J.P. (Jake) and Charlotte Akins Montgomery, Valdosta, GA and one sister, Doris Roark. He is survived by his loving wife, Elsa; sons, Mitchell II and Jay, Jacksonville; daughter, Christen, Jacksonville; stepson, Derek Martin and wife, Stacy; step-grandchildren, Adrian and Makayla; brother and sister-in-law, Stanley and Barbara Montgomery; Ashville, NC; sister and brother-in-law, Janet and Johnny Massey, Hartwell, GA; brother-in-law Clyde Roark, Valdosta, GA. He was a much loved Uncle to his nieces and nephews. His legacy is that of an adventurer, incredible entrepreneur, a giver, a helper, a devoted Christian, community supporter, a man committed to his family and friends
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on his birthday, Wednesday, July 26, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at North Jacksonville Baptist Church, 8531 N. Main Street, Jacksonville, FL 32218.
