Mr. Alton Phelps, 94, of Adel, Georgia, passed away Thursday March 16, 2017 at South Georgia Medical Center in Valdosta. He was born on February 10, 1923 in Adel to his late parents, Robert Mitchell Phelps and Flonnie Wooten Phelps. A lifelong resident of Cook County, Mr. Phelps was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church and a retired heating and air-conditioning maintenance technician for the Lowndes County School System. He was a Mason and served honorably in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Mr. Phelps is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Alan and Lisa Phelps of Adel; two daughters and sons-in-law: Beth and Chuck Willis of Adel, and Karen and Darrell Bryan of Sparks, GA; six grandchildren: Heather and Chris Morris of Adel, Alda and Jeremy Thompson of Leesburg, GA, Trina and Lyn Stone of Adel, Alana and Michael Dixon of Sparks, Sheena and Ryan O'Neill of Alamogordo, NM, and Cam and Kaydee Phelps of Adel; thirteen great-grandchildren; a brother, Gene Phelps of Belton, TX; and a sister, Kate Hutchinson of Adel. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen Wright Phelps;his second wife, Winnie George Phelps; and a son, Donald Alton Phelps.
The Phelps family will receive friends on Friday March 17, 2017 from 6 until 8 PM at Boone Funeral Home South, 1804 S. Hutchinson Ave., in Adel. The funeral service will be held on Saturday March 18, 2017 at 11 AM in the chapel of Boone Funeral Home with Dr. Danny Ray officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn City Cemetery in Adel where military honors and Masonic graveside rites will be conducted.
