Charlotte Rebecca Burson Jones, 86 of Quitman passed away Thursday, April 20, 2017 at South Georgia Medical Center. She was born August 9, 1930 in Gainesville, Hall County, Georgia to James Mell Burson and Grace Ione Smith. She had a brother, James William Burson, born May 15, 1934 in Gainesville, Hall County, Georgia. She attended grammar school in Gainesville and continued her education at Monroe, GA High School. She graduated from Georgia State College for Women in June 1952 with a degree in Home Economics. In the fall of 1952 she came to Quitman and taught Home Economics in Quitman High School. While living in New Orleans, Louisiana she completed a course of study in school media and was certified as a Media Specialist in Louisiana. In 1984 she accepted employment as librarian for the Quitman-Brooks County Library, then on North Culpepper Street in Quitman. After receiving a Master Degree from Valdosta State University, she accepted a position as school media specialist at North Brooks Elementary School, retiring from that position.
On June 9, 1953, she married Augustus Bennett Jones, III in the Quitman Baptist Church. Two children were born to this union are Augustus Bennett Jones, IV and James Chandler Jones who married Susan Ann Thayer. James and Susan have two children, Daniel Bennett Jones and Amanda Thayer Jones who is married to Evan Bailey. Amanda and Evan have a daughter Brevet Grace Bailey who was born September 26, 2016.
Charlotte is a member of the Quitman United Methodist Church, National Society Daughters American Revolution, The Quitman Garden Club and is a founding member of the Quitman-Brooks County Museum. She has been a trustee since it was founded. She has been greatly involved in the restoration of The West End Cemetery.
Charlotte is survived by her husband, Augustus B. Jones, III; her sons, Augustus B. Jones, IV, and James C. Jones and daughter in law, Susan T. Jones; grandchildren, Daniel B. Jones, and Amanda J. Bailey; great granddaughter, Brevet G. Bailey; sister in law, Jackie Ballad Burson; and nephew James William Burson, Jr.
Graveside services will be held Thursday, April 27, 2017 at 9:30 a.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery, on the old side, with Rev. Pam France officiating. Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.maxwellmillerfuneralhome.com. Maxwell-Miller Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
