Lucy Akins, 92, of Nashville, died Monday August 7, 2017 in the Fellowship Home of Nashville.
She was born January 2, 1925 in Berrien County to the late Shellie W. Parrish and the late Lena Taylor Parrish. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, a homemaker, member of the Community United Methodist Church, Pine Needle Sewing Club and was named a District Homemaker of the Year. She was very active in her community and has been recognized on many levels for her talents and achievements. She started her own business, Lucy' s Garden and Gifts, a gift shop in her home, creating unique designs for weddings, events. If you received a present with an "Its from Lucys tag you know it would be special.
She and her daughter designed and created the Christmas tree for the State Capitol that was featured in Time and People magazines as the eleventh prized award winning tree of the United States. Not only did her creations touch the viewer's eyes but she touched the heart of everyone she met. She spread her love of God throughout her community with southern hospitality and a continual way of helping others.
She was the widow of Arthur Pittman who died who 1945 and also Alton Barney Akins who died in 1998. She was also preceded in death by a son-in-law: Paul Thiele; 3 sisters: Dorothy Akins, Sara Nell Parrish and Martha June Parrish; 1 unnamed sibling and her 2 infants.
She is survived by 2 daughters: Linda (Wyman) Butler of Nashville and Loretha Akins Thiele of Nashville; 2 sons: Parrish (Sara) Akins of Nashville and Steve Akins (Mark Gillespie) of Atlanta; 6 grandchildren: Bill, Bob and Barry Butler, Beth Stuerman, Chandler and Callie Akins; 7 great grandchildren: Sean and Ryan Stuerman, Bryson, Allie, Trent, Tate and Tripp Butler.
Pallbearers include her grandchildren, Bill, Bob and Barry Butler, Chandler Akins, Sean and Ryan Stuerman.
Funeral services will be held Thursday August 10, 2017 at 2 PM in the Community United Methodist Church with the Rev. Don Bridges and Rev. Wayne Mitchell officiating with interment to follow in the Pleasant Cemetery. Visitation is Wednesday from 6 to 8 PM.
