Mr. Coke's Story
Mr. Coke Eugene Rogers, age 85, died on Friday, June 30, 2017, at the Ogeechee Area Hospice Inpatient Facility in Statesboro. Gene was born on June 17, 1932, in the Zion Community, Marion, South Carolina, to Coke H. and Wynema L. Rogers. He attended local schools and was an outstanding basketball and baseball player, and graduated from Zion High School. He continued his education at Abraham Baldwin Agriculture College in Tifton and enjoyed playing intramural sports. His college studies were interrupted by two years of service in the U. S. Army where he served as a Military Policeman in the U.S. and in Germany. He then received his degree in Forestry at the University of Georgia in 1959. There he was a member of Alpha Gama Rho Fraternity.
Gene worked for the Georgia Forestry Commission from 1959 until 1991. His forest management duties stationed him in Perry, Americus, and Statesboro, where he worked from 1970 until his retirement. He will be remembered by his many friends as an avid hunter, fisherman, and traveler, as well for his daylily garden and generosity in sharing them with others. For all of his life, he was an outdoorsman who loved his surroundings and cherished his time spent as a conversationalist in the forest and countryside.
He is preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Claire Austin Powell; a sister, Frances R. Fore; and a brother, Maldon Rogers.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Meredith Young Rogers; one son, David M. Rogers (Lanelle) of Valdosta; three daughters, Rikki R. McDaniel of Reidsville, Amanda P. Neff of Locust Grove, and Shannon P. Hodges (John) of Statesboro; two sisters, Joyce R. Collins (Winfred) of Mullins, SC, and Mildred R. George (Percy) of Latta, SC.; and one brother, Lewis Rogers (Cynthia) of Rocky Ford. Grandchildren are Rebecca R. Carver (Daniel) of Valdosta, Marlee R. Walker (James) of Marietta, Caitlyn and Emily Neff of Savannah, Jarrett Rogers Green (Alexis) of Glenville, Margaret, Ian, and James Hodges of Statesboro, and Emma McDaniel of Reidsville; three great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews also survive.
The family will receive visitors in the conference room of Trinity Episcopal Church, 4401 Country Club Rd., Statesboro, GA, Monday, July 3, 2017 at 10:00 am with services following in the church sanctuary at 11:00 am with Rev. Joan Kilian officiating. Interment will follow in Eastside Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be his nephews.
