Irene Miller was born April 19, 1949, to the late Leroy Godfrey Sr. and Eula C. Godfrey.
Irene received her education in the Valdosta City School System and was a proud member of Pinevale High School Class of 1966. She furthered her education by attending and graduating from Fort Valley State University. She was a life member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated, Kappa Eta Omega Chapter. She used her degree to work as an educator for over 30 years in both Brooks and Lowndes County. Because Irene was an inspirational motivator with a great passion to help and encourage others, it is no wonder she was awarded Women of the Year, April 4, 2001. She was such a positive influence in the community, the school system and church. She was a faithful member of Southside Church of Christ where she served diligently until her health would no longer allow.
On Tuesday, September 26, 2023, in the presence of a heavenly host, Irene surrendered to the will of her Father recognizing the time of her departure was at hand. She knew deeply with herself, she had fought the good fight, finished her race and kept the faith and there was laid up for her a crown of righteousness.
In addition to her parents, Irene is preceded in death by her loving daughter: Deidra Miller, granddaughter, Destiny Newsome and sisters-in-law: Willie Dean Miller and Mae Lois Miller.
Irene leaves her legacy of love and devotion to her husband of 47 years, Arthur Miller. She leaves her legacy of strength and courage to her children: Randall Godfrey, Sr. (Rhonda), Derek Miller, Kedrek McKinney (Tony), and Monica Newsome.
To her siblings: Charlie "Gene" Godfrey, Sr. (Vivian), Herman Godfrey, Sr. (Sharon), Leroy Godfrey, Jr. (Neatha), Xavier Godfrey, Sr. (Cecelia). Sister-in law Maxine Parrish, she leaves her legacy of laughter and life.
Finally, to her grandchildren whom she absolutely adored: Jakari Jordan, Billy Ray McCoy III, Randall Godfrey, Jr., Grant Godfrey, Kendal Godfrey, Taneisha Holms, Derica Miller, Jeremy Miller, Rickelle Williams, Miqueria Newsome, Fantasia Newsome, KaTyteris Newsome, Kevin Newsome and Daquan Newsome: her host of great-grandchildren, nephews, and nieces, she leaves her legacy of wisdom and wit.
