John Winston Johnson of Enterprise, AL passed away on Tuesday, February 04, 2020. He was 82.

Major (Ret.) Johnson was born June 28, 1937 to the late Rufus and Bessie Johnson. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Alice Johnson; brother, Charles R. Johnson; sister, Beatrice J. Sherwood and brother, Julian Johnson.

Major (Ret.) John Winston Johnson began his military career in the ROTC program at the University of Georgia. Upon graduation, he was commissioned to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. Following basic training, Mr. Johnson was stationed in South Korea where he met his wife, Mary Alice (Bealke). Upon their return to the United States, the two were married and later stationed at Fort Rucker, Alabama. Mr. Johnson completed Flight School and became a Flight Instructor while stationed there. During his career, Mr. Johnson served two tours in Vietnam. He was awarded numerous medals and commendations including three Bronze Stars, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and a Purple Heart. Mr. Johnson and his family were also stationed in Caracas, Venezuela, and in the cities of Hanau and Frankfurt, Germany. Their last assignment was at Fort Rucker, Alabama. The Johnsons built a home in Enterprise, Alabama, in 1976. John and Mary Alice lived there until her death in November 2019, and his death in February 2020.

Survivors include his daughter, Denise Meacham (Dwayne) of Sharpsburg, GA; son, Eric Johnson (Kelly) of New Orleans, LA; brother, Gene Johnson (Carolyn) of Decatur, AL; sister, Mary Nell Wells of Suwanee, GA; sisters-in-law, Gretchen Bacon of Bradenton, FL and Betsy Shanafelt (Michael) of Ashland, OR; and four grandchildren: Morgan, Sarah, Winston and Tillman.

Burial with full military honors will take place at Arlington National Cemetery on Wednesday, July 29, 2020.
