Lola Macartney Troost passed away peacefully in Sarasota, Florida just before sunrise on March 18, 2025 surrounded by loved ones. Lola was always fond of the early morning hours, and it is fitting that she joined her parents William Napier Macartney, Jr. and Martha Smith Macartney as the day dawned. Her family will always cherish her beautiful, delightful and radiant smile.

Lola was born on March 20, 1937 in Utica, New York. She attended New Hartford High School in New Hartford, New York where she graduated on June 28, 1955. At graduation, Lola received the New Hartford Historical Society's award for Historical Essays. Following high school, Lola entered Penn Hall Junior College which was followed by attendance at the University of Rhode Island, and then Russell Sage College. Lola received a Bachelor of Science from Russell Sage College on May 31, 1959 in Home Economics. She next attended Boston University, graduating with a Masters in Education on June 5, 1963. Lola later served as a volunteer librarian for the United States Army in Korea. Her membership in the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, bestowed upon her in 1972, was another proud honor.

Lola was a lifelong educator. Not only was she tremendously proud of her own accomplishments, Lola in her sweet way encouraged everyone to be educated, and to seek higher degrees of education. Lola taught Kindergarten at Miami Country Day School in Miami Shores, Florida for many years. In the early 1990's, Lola moved to Sarasota, Florida where she continued teaching Kindergarten at The Out of Door Academy. Upon retiring, Lola remained quite busy and often commented that "Retirement is the best invention known to man!" Lola loved her adopted home of Sarasota. She enjoyed plays, concerts, entertainment of all kinds, cooking classes, music classes, golfing and the city's Classroom on Wheels. Lola traveled extensively, enjoying trips with family to places such as London, Paris, Spain, upstate New York, the Florida Keys and more. She also traveled with many dear friends (some of whom were teachers) to Boston, Cape Cod and Italy. Lola loved to take cruises, and one of her most memorable was to Alaska.

Lola is survived by her eldest daughter Elizabeth "Lisa" Claire Troost Hatcher and her husband Thomas Hailey Hatcher of Fleming Island, Florida, daughter Laurie Anne Troost of Sarasota, Florida and her youngest sibling, sister Barbara "Ann" Macartney of Canaan, New York. Lola was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Martha "Marty" Claghorn Macartney, her brother William Napier "Mac" Macartney, III, and Barbara Ann's husband, Olavi Hirvonen. Lola leaves behind many very loved nieces and nephews.

Lola has spent the last several years living at The Springs At Lake Pointe Woods. Her kind, gentle nature, blue eyes, infectious smile and signature "Shimmy Shimmy Shake" dance move made her a very loved resident. Lola was affectionately cared for by many wonderful people from The Springs and Right At Home Sarasota who have become extended family. Given the daily devotion to Lola by so many, the family expresses their most sincere appreciation and love.

A private gathering to honor Lola will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
